According to the
Los Angeles Times,
a new report finds that 1 in 5 adults were diagnosed with a mental illness in 2010. These numbers have only slightly increased from the year 2009. A severe mental condition could qualify an individual to receive
Social Security disability benefits.
A national survey found that in addition to 1 in 5 adults being diagnosed with a mental illness, the
age range with the highest rates was those between the ages of 18 and 25. The lowest rates were in those ages 50 and older.
Other findings from this survey include the following:
- women had higher rates of mental illness than men;
- those with substance abuse or dependence had higher rates;
- highest rates were with those who reported being of 2 or more races; and
- lowest rates were found with Asians.
The findings indicate that mental illness continues to be a problem which needs to be monitored and addressed. The
individuals who suffered from a serious mental illness found their lives disrupted because of their struggles with functioning. This is when Social Security disability benefits can help.
If you or someone you love is dealing with a severe mental condition and they are not able to function on a daily basis, you should
seek help from a Plantation Social Security disability attorney as soon as possible.
