25th Annual Golden Age for Games for Veterans a Success

Honolulu was host to a number of veterans on Memorial Day weekend. These veterans, none younger than 55, participated in the National Veterans Golden Age Games. This is the 25th year the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has sponsored these games in order to show how "the warrior spirit never fades."

This year's games saw more than 900 competitors in 14 diverse sporting events. Not only do the Golden Age Games encourage older veterans to remain active in their lives, they serve to show age does not mean living a non-active lifestyle.

Every veteran 55 years or older and receiving care can participate in the games, which include the following categories of participants divided by age:

  • ambulatory;
  • visually impaired; and
  • wheelchair.

These games are the largest in the country for senior veterans. They serve as qualifiers for National Senior Games, which falls under the purview of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The sports in which the veterans participated included:

  • air rifle;
  • dominoes;
  • table tennis;
  • bicycling;
  • nine-ball;
  • golf;
  • bowling;
  • swimming;
  • checkers;
  • horseshoes;
  • shuffleboard;
  • croquet;
  • discus; and
  • shot put.

For many competing veterans, the games are therapeutic. They also serve to demonstrate the high level of care i
involved in VA-provided therapeutic recreation programs.
