3 Autoimmune Disorders at Greatest Risk for Pulmonary Embolism

In a report from Health Day, patients who are hospitalized for autoimmune disorders are at a greater risk for pulmonary embolism. Social Security disability benefits could be available if you suffer from a severe health condition that prevents you from working.

Pulmonary embolism is a life-threatening condition in which a blood clot forms in the lung’s main artery
. A new study finds that those with autoimmune disorders such as Crohn’s disease, Grave’s disease, or rheumatoid arthritis are at risk of developing this clot, so measures need to be taken to help prevent it.

The autoimmune disorders with the highest risk include:

  • immune thrombocytopenic purpura;
  • polyarteritis nodosa; and
  • polymyositis.

Blood clots were found to be 6 times higher for patients with autoimmune disorders in the 12 months following a hospitalization; however, as time passes, the risk decreases. It dropped to 50% 1 to 5 years after hospitalization, 10 years after, it dropped to 15% and longer than 10 years it dropped to 4%.

Whether you have been diagnosed with a disabling autoimmune disorder, heart problem, or any other severe medical condition where daily functioning is impaired, you could be entitled to receive Social Security disability benefits.
