The
Doctor’s Lounge reports that
there are 3 factors which may affect death from Parkinson’s disease. When this type of debilitating disease strikes, it could lead to an individual needing
Social Security disability benefits.
These findings are a result of a large
study performed in the U.S. on Parkinson’s patients between the years 2002 and 2008. During the period of this study, 64% of the patients died.
One risk factor impacting the death rate from Parkinson’s was gender, in that
men were more likely than women to die.
Another risk factor had to with race, with
African Americans being slightly more at risk than Caucasian patients (66% compared to 65%). Those of Hispanic origin had a 55% risk of death and Asians had a 51% risk.
The third factor had to do with dementia.
Those who suffered from dementia and Parkinson’s are more likely to die. Nearly 70% of the patients in the study had dementia.
Even after adjusting ages, the presence of dementia remained the biggest factor in death rates. This reveals a need
for better prevention and treatment of dementia for those patients who have Parkinson’s.
