30% Decrease in Hospitalization Rates for Heart Failure

According to a report from Health Day, a new study finds a 30% decrease in heart failure hospitalization rates. When a severe health condition has resulted in you being unable to work, then you could be entitled to receive Social Security disability benefits.

What are being attributed to the decrease in hospitalizations are 4 main reasons:

  • fewer heart attacks;
  • better outpatient care;
  • decrease in cardiovascular diseases; and
  • better control of risk factors (such as elevated blood pressure).

Not only does the drop in hospitalizations mean improved health for Americans but less money is being spent on healthcare, saving Medicare $4.1 billion in 2008, according to researchers.

In addition to the general drop in hospitalizations, it was specifically found that the rate of women being hospitalized due to heart failure has gone from 58.9%, in 1998, to 55.7%, in 2008. Furthermore, the rate of death decreased from 31.7%, in 1998, to 29.6%, in 2008.

The state of Vermont has seen the largest drops in hospitalizations, while Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Wyoming are seeing the smallest drops. Although there has been a significant decrease in the past decade, there's still more work to be done.
