In keeping with their commitment to become more energy efficient and support renewable energy initiatives, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is continuing their involvement with solar energy.
To that end, they awarded contracts to build solar photovoltaic (PV) systems worth $56.7 million in 5 VA medical centers in:
At the same time they are becoming more involved in clean energy, the VA is creating new jobs and expanding "innovation in the federal government," which is in line with the President's initiative, according to VA Sec. Eric Shinseki. In celebrating the positive qualities of solar power, Sec. Shinseki stated these contracts are good for both veterans and the environment.
Installation of the PV systems will happen by next summer. The VA chose which medical centers would have PV systems installed based on how ideal their location was for "on-site renewable energy projects," which was determined through various studies.
The VA is still working toward their 2013 goal of ensuring15% of their yearly annual electricity consumption comes from renewable energy. These 5 PV systems not only help the VA work toward that goal, they deliver a host of other benefits as well.
