John Cornelius, a 93-year-old veteran of World War II, spent many years raising more than $100,000 in support for the patients of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Prescott, AZ. His efforts began a few years ago when, during one of his routine check-ups at the VA, he saw other veterans that reminded him of the other soldiers who served alongside him during his deployment to Italy and West Africa.
Cornelius soon began writing letters on bright yellow legal paper to some of the most influential people in his area. The letters, some 300 of them,
reached out to business leaders and politicians asking for support of a charity raffle with donations and ticket purchases.
Over 80 responses were received in forms such as golfing packages to exotic courses, cruises, and local business offerings.
Since starting his effort,
Cornelius’ raffle has been conducted every year on December 7 – the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack – and he has no intent of stopping any time soon.
All of the
money raised in the fundraisers goes toward supplementing the VA center’s current budget to allow them to expand on services not typically covered with normal operating funds. Initiatives such as these help
disabled veterans and their families receive more complete support.
If you are a disabled veteran who has been denied disability compensation or have not yet applied for benefits from the VA, a South Florida disability attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg is ready to help. To learn if you are entitled to certain programs and benefits
