A genetic link may exist between the age of a father and the diagnosis of bipolar or other disorders in his children.

A recent report published on September 1, 2008 in the Archives of General Psychiatry suggests that there may be a link between a father's age and the onset of bipolar disorder in his children. The authors of the report suggest that the link lies in an older man's genetic mechanism. As men age, specifically when they are 29 years or older, their successive germ cells replicate and new cells mutate repetitively as a result of DNA copy errors.
