"War changes people. You do not come out of a combat zone the same," Iraq war veteran Chanan Suarez Diaz told the audience while moderating the veteran's panel at the continuation of the "Winter Soldier" hearings in Portland, OR. "War is very numbing...it comes to a point that you see so much destruction you become numb. This bullshit about bringing democracy or liberation is nonsense -- we've killed over one million Iraqis."
Thanks to our popular culture and the media, I've seen actual war footage and war movies based on true accounts, and as a result, I often imagine the monstrosities that occur in today's wars and the wars of our nation's past. But to hear actual stories being told in detail by actual veterans really saddens me and makes me pray for a swift resolution to the conflicts in the Middle East.
Maybe after you read this article you too will understand why more and more soldiers are refusing to re-deploy to the war in Iraq or Afghanistan.
