Agent Orange Exposure Commonly Linked to Cancer & Endocrine Disorders

Exposure to Agent Orange has shown to impact Vietnam veterans severely in 2 distinct ways: increasing risk of cancer and causing endocrine and lymphatic disorders.

As our medical community continues to identify causes of cancer, studies of Vietnam veterans have shown that there are several types of cancer that commonly manifest in veterans from the Vietnam War. Through research, it has been determined that exposure to Agent Orange can often cause a higher rate of many cancers, including: 

• Respiratory cancers;
• Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma;
• Chronic B-cell leukemia;
• Multiple myeloma;
• Hodgkin's disease; and
• Prostate cancer. 

Veterans of the Vietnam War have been shown to have nearly two times the rate of diabetes mellitus (type 2) than the regular population. There have also been some cases in which the children of Agent Orange veterans have shown an increased rate of diabetes.

There are many other endocrine and lymphatic disorders commonly linked to exposure to Agent Orange. Graves' Disease is one condition now being studied in connection with Agent Orange exposure. Researchers who participated in the International Thyroid Congress in 2010 analyzed the common disorders in Vietnam veterans and saw a significant increase in cases of Graves' Disease.

Many of the cancers mentioned above, such as Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma impact the lymphatic systems as well. All of these conditions can cause seriously disabling complications that may qualify veterans for disability benefits through the VA.
