A recent audit of a Birmingham, Ala. Disability Determination Service center-the state's primary office for evaluating Social Security disability claims-revealed that some workers pressured medical consultants to approve more cases than usual.
According to Alabama Live, Emails were discovered in which supervisors warned medical consultants about their low acceptance rate. The Emails also mentioned a plan if the acceptance rates were to drop below 30%.
While an increase in approved applications certainly benefits those applying for disability, it is more beneficial to everyone in the program if the proper measures are followed to approve applicants for their benefits.
It appears as if some of the Birmingham officials were more concerned about how a low acceptance rate would make them appear, instead of putting a focus on streamlining the application process to make it more efficient and effective for those seeking disability benefits.
