Alternative to One-Time Check Calls for Death Benefit Elimination

While many are upset about the idea of not receiving a cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, some are even more troubled by the possibility of a $250 check to offset the loss. Clearly, not everyone will be happy no matter how the matter is ultimately resolved.

In response to the anger over the loss of COLA, President Obama recently threw out the idea of a one-time $250 check to recipients of Social Security payments. While many agree that it might help, not only to make up for the lack of increased payments in 2010, but also to stimulate the economy on a small scale, some strongly disagree.

A few people have proposed more creative ideas to make everyone happy while helping the economy. They have suggested that the Lump Sum Death Benefit be eliminated, offering the funds instead to SSA recipients.

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, the benefit was created in order to help cover funeral costs. The one-time check for $255 would not be of much help these days when paying for a funeral, and there are several restrictions on it when it comes to who can get it. Many people are not eligible, and the amount has not increased since the 1950s. In fact, most people do not seem to know anything about it.

Eliminating this benefit and turning over the check to current recipients could save the beleaguered Social Security Administration millions of dollars. At the same time, it would allow beneficiaries to have the money while they are still alive, when $255 really could make a difference.

This proposal might not suit everyone, especially those who do qualify for the Lump Sum Death Benefit. However, more people do receive SSA funds, and wrestle with the thought of increasing the national debt just to get one check each. While the COLA decision is final for 2010, there are alternatives still being proposed. This means that this idea, especially if backed by a politician in the future, could become reality.
