Always Alert SSA to Change of Address

The New Year is a common time for significant life changes. If your plans for 2010 include moving to a new home and you receive Social Security disability benefits, be sure to alert the SSA to your change of address as soon as possible. This applies to anyone who receives DIB or SSI payments. 

Alerting the SSA to your new address can help ensure that you won't encounter unnecessary delays in the payment of the disability benefits to which you are entitled. Even if you receive your payments via direct deposit, it is always helpful for the SSA to have your most up-to-date information. 

A few other reasons and considerations for promptly changing your address with the SSA: 

• Your disability benefits may change, depending on your address
• You won't miss out on important SSA alerts and notices
• If you alert the SSA immediately of your move, there should be no delay in receiving your disability benefits payment 

You can change your address online at the SSA's webpage. To do this: 

• Click on the item that says What You Can Do Online
• Choose If You Get Benefits
• You can use your Social Security password to change your address
• Even if you do not have a Social Security password, this option is available to you 

Be sure that everyone at your home who receives Social Security disability benefits completes this process individually. Changing your address does not automatically change the address of everyone else who lives in your home.
