Alzheimer Patients May be Taking Medication that Counter Effects Alzheimer’s Drugs

In a report from MSN Health, Alzheimer patients may be taking medication that counters the effects of Alzheimer drugs. When you have been diagnosed with a severe medical condition that prevents you from working, Social Security disability benefits could be available.

Many patients with Alzheimer's take cholinesterase inhibitors, such as Aricept, in order to slow down the progression of this disease; however, anticholinergic medications, such as Ditropan (which treats overactive bladders) or Benadryl, can counter the effects of cholinesterase inhibitors.

Anticholinergic medications may be taken to treat various conditions including:

  • depression;
  • Parkinson's disease;
  • gastrointestinal disorders;
  • allergies; and
  • incontinence.

While no serious side effects were found and there was no increase in death, by taking both types of medications, it could lead to neither type working.

Researchers indicate that Alzheimer patients may be put on both types of medications because of the multiple health problems they often suffer from; however, doctors may need to determine if other types of medications would be helpful or if both types are necessary.

The results of this study can be found in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, October 22 online edition.
