Alzheimer’s Disease Linked to Increased Abdominal Fat

A new study has found that there is an increased risk of developing dementia or Alzheimer's disease in individuals who have large mid-sections or carry excess weight in their abdominal region.

Dementia is an often disabling condition that affects certain brain functions and can lead to:

  • Loss of memory;
  • Difficulty communicating; and
  • Mood swings.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive form of dementia. While dementia patients are typically elderly, Alzheimer's can strike when people are in their 40s or 50s.

The study found that those who were overweight had smaller brain volume, which is a key factor in developing dementia. A bulging middle showed to be a particular factor in the risk of dementia.

Large midsections, or "beer bellies," are already a risk factor for developing other conditions such as:

  • Heart disease;
  • High blood pressure;
  • High cholesterol; and
  • Diabetes.

Alzheimer's disease is a serious medical condition that can leave an individual unable to function on a daily basis, including an inability to work. This can lead to the need for Social Security disability benefits.

If you or someone you love suffers from Alzheimer's disease or any other severe mental or physical disability, you may qualify for Social Security disability. Contact a disability attorney who can help you determine eligibility.
