Social Security disability benefits could be available if you suffer from a medical condition that has left you permanently disabled. One such condition is Alzheimer's disease.
According to a report from
CNN Health,
Alzheimer's may be redefined as a spectrum disease with 3 stages.
The development of Alzheimer's can begin even before an individual displays symptoms such as memory problems. By the time there is a definite diagnosis it has often progressed significantly.
The Alzheimer's Association and the National Institutes of Health are proposing to redefine Alzheimer's as a spectrum disease, with the 3 stages ranging from mild to severe. The goal is for an earlier diagnosis and treatment.
The 3 proposed stages include:
- Preclinical Alzheimer's - for research purposes only where it can be determined if there is a biological change that could possibly be detected through testing (neuroimaging, spinal fluid test, blood, etc.), something researchers continue to work at developing;
- Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) - signs such as changes in behavior, thinking and memory are often indicators of the potential to develop Alzheimer's, however there is still no definitive test for this so it will require a comprehensive exam; and
- Dementia - at this stage dementia is often found to be the result of Alzheimer's, with new guidelines including symptoms such as visual and spatial difficulties, impaired judgment and reasoning, etc.
