Alzheimer’s Risk May Be Reduced with Exercise and Vitamin D

Alzheimer's is a serious condition that can lead to a person becoming completely disabled and in need of Social Security disability benefits. However, new studies have shown that the risk of Alzheimer's may be reduced with exercise and taking vitamin D.

After conducting 2 long-term studies in Framingham, Massachusetts, it has been concluded that by consuming adequate amounts of Vitamin D and participating in physical activity, the risk is lessened for dementia and cognitive impairment.

In one of the studies, 1,200 people were tracked since 1948. Physical activity levels of the participants were monitored from 1986 through 1987. Now after decades of follow-up it was found that of those 1,200 participants, 193 had developed Alzheimer's and 242 had developed dementia.

It was also found that those who were avid exercisers had a 40% less chance of developing any type of dementia. This study indicates that exercise is at least a contributing factor to fighting off Alzheimer's.

In a second study it was found that a deficiency in vitamin D increased the chances of dementia and cognitive impairment. Those with vitamin D deficiency were 42% at higher risk.
