An Overview Of Earned Veterans’ Benefits

January 27, 2011 - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers various levels of benefits to veterans who have served this country. Not every veteran will qualify or need every benefit the VA offers, but should they need help, the VA likely has some way to offer assistance. Many veterans, however, are simply not aware of the benefits and programs available to them through the VA.

Being declared at least 10% disabled from a service-related injury allows veterans to file for disability compensation. Obviously the higher the percentage of disability, the greater the amount of compensation available. Those wartime veterans aged 65 and older living on a limited income may also qualify for pension benefits and some forms of disability insurance are available.

Veterans are also entitled to educational benefits. These benefits go beyond the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and include both the Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP) and Voc-Rehab for Disabled Veterans. These benefits may also be used by family members through the Survivors & Dependents Educational Assistance Program.

Veterans also qualify for guaranteed loans. These loans can be used to buy homes, or condos, or can be used to refinance an already purchased home.

The VA also offers benefits to dependents and survivors through Disability and Indemnity Compensation (DIC). Survivors of veterans who died while on active duty, or died from a service-connected injury, or were drawing 100% disability, can recover VA compensation. Death pensions and burial benefits, which can include headstones, are also available for those qualifying survivors. The VA Civilian Health and Medical Program (CHAMPVA) aids survivors and dependents with medical services.

VA health care services are very inclusive and range from dental treatments and major surgery to mental health counseling as well as nursing home care and sexual trauma counseling. Homeless veterans can also qualify for VA health programs and transitional housing programs.

Different veterans' benefits require different qualification and some have time limits imposed on them as well. These are benefits veterans have earned and as long as they are available should be utilized if needed.
