According to a report from the
American Heart Association (AHA),
anemic patients who suffer a stroke are at an increased risk of death. When you are unable to work due to a severe medical condition,
long-term disability benefits could help offset your lost income.
New research finds that anemia can impact the outcome of a stroke, with the risk of death being tripled within the first year.
Severe anemia is also found to be a greater predictor of death after a stroke than other conditions, such as heart disease or cancer.
In addition, they find that patients who are mildly anemic should also be aware of this increased risk and discuss it with their doctor. Since this is a fairly common condition, doctors should also do their part to check if patients are anemic.
Other findings from this study indicate that individuals who have severe anemia were 3.5 times more likely to die in the hospital.
Those with moderate anemia were 2 times as likely to die after a stroke in the 6 to 12 months following. Those
with mild anemia were 1.5 times more likely to die in that same time period.
