Answers to Questions About Changes When It Comes To Disability

Most people who get Social Security disability payments depend on the program to get by. In fact, in most cases, you have to be unable to work any job in order to qualify in the first place. Additionally, most people who get disability payments need some sort of healthcare to manage their condition, typically received through Medicare.

If this describes you, but you have recently considered switching from Medicare to private health insurance, you might worry about how this will affect your eligibility. If you can qualify for and receive private insurance, you can indeed still receive disability payments. You would just cease using Medicare, as long as you can afford a monthly premium for private care. The issue comes only when you get cash benefits from another source just for your disability.

If you do get money for any disability from another company, your payments from the government could be reduced or even stop altogether.
Such sources of income regarding your condition could include money from either a lump-sum settlement or workers' compensation. Even participating in drug trials and receiving the typical compensation for your time could reduce disability payments.

Though many people agree that disability payments are typically not enough to live on alone comfortably, the Social Security Administration does keep close tabs on any other money you might get. Even if you get a part-time job, you must report it to the SSA immediately, or risk getting your benefits taken away.

If you do not agree with a decision made regarding your case, you have the right to a lawyer.
You can appeal if you think a mistake has been made or if you disagree with a decision. You may also contact an experienced lawyer if you have any questions about actions that might put your disability payments in jeopardy.
