Are Conflicts of Interest Affecting Heart Health Guidelines?

Cardiovascular diseases
can become disabling. If you are no longer able to work because of your medical condition you may be entitled to receive Social Security disability benefits.

A troubling report from the Doctor's Lounge reveals that there may widespread conflict-of-interest issues in regards to heart treatment guidelines and drug makers. This comes after it was found that many drug makers have ties to some of the writers of the guidelines.

The most common types of conflict of interest that were found to exist between drug makers and writers of heart treatment guidelines include:

  • the writer(s) own stock in a drug company;
  • the writer(s) were the recipient of a research grant from a drug company;
  • the writer(s) are members of, or consultant to, an advisory board; and/or
  • the writer(s) belong to a speaker's bureau.

These conflict of interest issues are a concern, since heart treatment guidelines are many times accepted as a standard of care. It was found that out of 498 people who played a role in the creation of the heart treatment guidelines, 56% had a conflict of interest.
