Are You Eligible for a Disability Tax Reduction?

Tax season can be a hectic and confusing time, particularly if you have complicated returns with numerous deductions and special circumstances. Whether you already receive Social Security disability benefits, or are awaiting your decision, you might not have extra money to pay a professional to prepare your taxes. If you choose to use tax software, you may still be left with questions about your specific tax situation.

OregonLive.com
reports that there may be some confusion about tax credits for disabled individuals, as some tax software asks whether anyone in the household has a disability. Generally speaking, the answer is no, there is not an individual deduction given for having a disability. However, some people can file Schedule R if they fall into certain categories.

If you are 65 years or older by the end of the tax year, you can file using Schedule R, according to Brighthub. If you are younger than 65 but were permanently disabled at the time you retired from work, you can also file for this deduction, as long as you received taxable disability income for the year. For the 2009 tax year, you can file Schedule R if you were disabled prior to Jan. 1, 1976 or Jan. 1, 1977 and you retired prior to 1977.

Read Schedule R carefully before filing your taxes. If you have questions related specifically to your disability payments and the process of applying for disability benefits, an experienced disability attorney can offer you more personalized advice.
