November 16, 2010 - The Department of Defense (DoD) has long since been opposed to implementing and using the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) software for electronic health records (EHRs). Despite the DoD's resistance, the Army has moved forward with attempting to use a similar, open source application of the VA's EHR software in a military hospital located in Baghdad, Iraq.
The Army wants WorldVistA, which is a free, opens source application of the VA's EHR software, downloaded and used at Al Muthana Military Hospital. The hospital holds 50 beds, and is run by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense. The Army claims this software will allow greater communication between Iraqi health providers, which translates into better health care for all Iraqi people. Additionally, using WorldVistA will allow Iraqi health care providers to spend less time on managerial actions and more time on actually providing health care.
The Iraqi version of VistA would be changed to fit their specific needs. More than that, there is an entire health care community spread around the world already utilizing the open source WorldVistA software. The Iraqi health care provider network would be plugged in globally, which means they will have access to system experts should they run into problems.
Seemingly, installing WorldVistA would be of great benefit to the Iraqi health care system. It would most likely also help Iraq situate themselves into a global health care environment. Most likely, Iraq will install VistA in other segments of its health care system should this initial install proves successful.
