Art Show in Brooklyn Will Feature Works by Combat Veterans

From April 30 to May 31, artwork created by veterans will be the primary show at Prophecies Art Gallery in Brooklyn. Lenny Goodstein is a veteran and the owner of the gallery, and looks forward to displaying the work created by "discarded" veterans.

Using art as a therapeutic tool is not a new concept. For many veterans, there could not be a better outlet for their issues, which range from re-adjusting to a sometimes unforgiving civilian world, to suffering from incapacitating mental conditions.

Goodstein-who has converted the front of the gallery into a "bunker"-hopes to use the gallery to not only bring awareness to a struggling veteran community, but to gain some recognition for the talents of the veteran-artists. At the same time, veterans submitting pieces stand to make money from everything that sells, and many of them are in great need.

For Goodstein, running this show is about something much deeper than art. This is about helping veterans, many of which have nowhere else to turn. Art is therapy for many of the contributing artists, and this show gave them incentive to continue along that healing path. For other artists, this show is more about solidarity and companionship. Participating in such a show with brothers-in-arms, reinforcing the bond combat veterans have with one another, means more than many can express.
