For many who suffer from serious kidney failure, a transplant may be necessary. A chronic disease that necessitates something as serious as an organ transplant may lead an individual to seek Social Security disability benefits.
A new study shows that patients with kidney disease who have had previous organ transplants may preemptively have their names added to the waiting list for a kidney transplant. This includes patients who have undergone lung, liver or heart transplants.
Researchers in the study expressed concern that these patients were placed on the list before even needing dialysis. It is believed that this preemptive measure is taken in order to increase the patient's chance of survival. But the research also raises concerns that perhaps it is unfair to place these patients on a list ahead of those who are currently suffering kidney transplant and may be in need of a transplant.
Currently in the United States, there are more than 85,000 people on the waiting list for a new kidney and about half will succumb to their illness before receiving the transplant.
