Avastin Approval for Treating Advanced Breast Cancer Revoked

According to the Herald Extra, the approval of Avastin for the treatment of advanced breast cancer has been revoked. If breast cancer or any other type of cancer has left you disabled, then Social Security disability benefits could be available.

With so many breast cancer patients holding out hope that Avastin could help, it has been a difficult ruling; however, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that the dangerous side effects are greater than any benefits Avastin can deliver.

Avastin continues to be available in treating other types of cancers, such as brain, lung, colon, and kidney and, although the FDA has revoked it, doctors are still able to prescribe Avastin to breast cancer patients; however, insurance companies will likely not cover it but those on Medicare can still receive it.

Some of the dangerous side effects of Avastin include:

  • heart failure;
  • tears in the intestines and stomach;
  • significantly high blood pressure;
  • heart attack; and
  • excessive bleeding.
