Backlogs on Social Security Disability Vary By State

Backlogs on Social Security disability benefits vary by which state you live in. The longest delays in receiving disability benefits are in the following states:

  • Alabama
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • Ohio
  • Wisconsin
  • District of Columbia

In these states, you can expect to sometimes wait more than double the time it takes in other states.

The states that have the shortest waiting times for disability benefits are:

  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Hawaii
  • Maine
  • Louisiana
  • Massachusetts
  • Oklahoma
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • West Virginia

Thankfully, the Social Security Administration has made some progress in reducing the waiting time for disability hearings in the U.S. The average wait time was once 514 days. It is now down to 442 days.

The fact remains, however, that there are still many people who must wait a long time, which increases the hardship in their lives. With the economy being at such a poor state, waiting is not an easy task for someone who is disabled and still trying to stay afloat.

If you or someone you love is suffering from a physical or mental disability, contact an experienced Social Security disability attorney who can help you determine if you are eligible to file a Social Security disability claim.

The process of securing Social Security Disability and/or Supplemental Security Income benefits can be difficult and overwhelming. Don't go it alone!
