Benefits from an Experimental Blood Thinner Prior to Heart Surgery

According to a report from Health Day, patients, who are undergoing heart surgery, may benefit from an experimental blood thinner known as cangrelor. If your heart condition is severe and prevents you from continuing to work, you could be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits.

While most heart patients are on anti-clotting drugs, such as Plavix, there are risks when surgery is involved. One of the most common is bleeding during surgery.

As a result, most doctors have to stop these drugs about 5 to 7 days prior to performing surgery on a patient. The downside is that the protection against the forming of blood clots isn’t there, which is why this new blood thinner could be helpful in between.

The study found that cangrelor not only helped prevent bleeding but also helped lower the risk of blood clots. While it has shown positive results, the drug is still investigational. The hope is to see it approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) so that it can be used in the future by patients undergoing heart surgery.
