Firefighters put themselves in the line of duty every day that they work. Now they may get recognized in one more state for the risks they take daily. A new bill in Wisconsin would allow some firefighters to receive disability payments in the future should a debilitating injury occur. Similar bills are already in effect in 15 other states.
According to the Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin, the bill has been a long time coming for those who risk their lives each day for the public. Compared to many other jobs, this career is one of the most dangerous, so making sure they have access to disability benefits as soon as possible can help any injured firefighters.
The bill does not mean every firefighter, injured or not, could automatically receive benefits. Like anyone else, the claimant would have to prove he or she is permanently disabled and cannot work anymore. Whether the issue is smoke inhalation or any other fire-related injury, it would have to be proven just like in anyone else's case.
In fact, cities, who would be making the disability payments to their injured firefighters, could challenge any cases. City officials could claim that the disability was there before, or is not career-related. However, firefighters would benefit from this bill because the city would have to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. This means that firefighters would get more support, making it harder to deny benefits to them.
Though the bill is widely supported by the Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin, it would also apply to police and other enforcers of the law. Anyone who risks their life daily for the public should not have to fight tooth and nail to get by after a job-related accident. However, if they do, they should contact a lawyer well versed in disability law.
