Biomarker Provides Clues to Severity of Alzheimer’s Disease

Social Security disability benefits may be available if you suffer from a debilitating condition that is expected to last at least 12 months or is expected to end in death. Alzheimer's disease is one condition that may qualify an individual for Social Security disability benefits.

According to a report from the Doctor's Lounge, a new study shows that a biomarker may provide clues to the severity of Alzheimer's. However, the biomarker is not useful in predicting early warning signs that an individual will develop Alzheimer's.

Researchers believe this finding is still helpful since it indicates how the blood may provide signs of Alzheimer's. Scientists hope this discovery will eventually lead to being able to identify markers in the blood that are able to predict the onset of Alzheimer's.

At this time, the diagnosis of Alzheimer's is still uncertain in patients who are living. It isn't until after an individual has passed away that an official diagnosis can be confirmed.

With Alzheimer's affecting nearly 5.2 million people in the U.S. and the number expecting to grow by the year 2030 to as much as 7.7 million, the need to find a way to predict and prevent Alzheimer's also grows.
