New research shows that biomarkers in the blood may help to diagnose Alzheimer's disease in its earliest stages. Alzheimer's disease is a debilitating condition that can make it impossible for a person to work and cause them to seek Social Security disability benefits.
As research into Alzheimer's continues, there is hope that finding better ways to diagnose the disease will help medical experts to determine the best types of treatment plans to slow the progress of Alzheimer's.
A study was conducted with 197 patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's and 203 individuals who don't have the disease. Researchers drew blood serum from all of the participants and analyzed 100 biomarkers in their blood.
A risk score was then assigned to the participants, which depended on various biomarker levels. Researchers were able to find 22 significant types of biomarkers that may help to indicate the onset of Alzheimer's. This study is just one step in the process of determining how biomarkers indicate disease. Further research is needed in order to apply these findings in a real world scenario.
