In a report from Health News, researchers from Cytograft Tissue Engineering, Inc. were able to create blood vessels from skin cells which could potentially help diabetics who are on dialysis.
The process involved first growing the skin cells into sheets. They were then formed into the shape of vessels and wrapped around an artificial support. In about 2 month's the vessels were fully formed enabling them for human implantation.
The 3 patients from Poland who participated in this groundbreaking research had been on dialysis via a catheter in the groin. They didn't have adequate veins in the arm that could be used for dialysis. After 8 months, the patients were able to successfully receive dialysis through the means of these skin cell-created blood vessels.
This small study is advancing in Europe and if the results are successful, there is potential for Cytograft Tissue Engineering, located in California, to seek approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
