Bonuses approved for thousands of VA employees

According to CNN, millions of dollars in bonuses - $24 million to be exact - were approved for employees at the Department of Veterans Affairs in the past few years. Meanwhile, many veterans and their families are expected to patiently wait for their claims for benefits to be processed and approved.

Bonuses were made primarily to the employees of the technology department at the VA and were as high as $73,000 for senior level personnel. The average bonus amounted to $2500 over a two-year period.

The VA's Inspector General conducted an investigation into the bonuses which it has referred to as "unusual and often absurd" and "not fiscally responsible." The ranking Republican on the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee is urging Congress to further investigate the bonuses and alleged improper conduct by a recently retired VA official who authorized the payments.
