Brain Shrinkage Early Sign of Alzheimer’s Disease

According to a report from the Doctor's Lounge, a new study finds brain shrinkage to be linked to Alzheimer's, even in those individuals who have no current signs of memory loss.

Researchers find that brains can begin shrinking even a decade before there are any noticeable signs of Alzheimer's.

The study was performed by Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, using brain imaging on adults with no signs of memory problems. Of those who had significant brain shrinkage, (also known as atrophy), 55% went on to develop Alzheimer's, while 20% of those with moderate shrinkage developed the disease.

Of those who had no brain shrinkage at all, none developed Alzheimer's. This provides a pretty clear picture of which individuals are at risk of developing what can be a very debilitating disease.

Additionally, researchers indicated that they could also determine how quickly an individual would progress with the disease.
