Brain Stents Found to Increase Risk of Strokes and Death

According to a report from the Washington University in St. Louis - Newsroom, brain stents are found to increase the risk of stroke and death. When you've suffered a stroke or any other severe condition that has left you permanently disabled, then you may qualify to receive Social Security disability benefits.

A multi-center clinical trial reveals that the brain stents which are designed to open arteries and to reduce the risk of a stroke are actually twice as likely to cause a stroke or death.

Enrollment in trials related to the brain stents was stopped in April by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, when it was discovered that after just 1 month of treatment, patients with the brain stents had a high risk of suffering a stroke or death.

A clinical alert was issued at that time. It's now likely to lead to an increased use of medication and changes in lifestyle in order to lower cholesterol, blood pressure, or reduce the risk of clotting.

Meanwhile researchers are trying to determine why the brain stents caused the strokes or death.

Strokes caused by brain artery blockages account for more than 50,000 of the 795,000 strokes
that strike people nationwide each year. In the United States, it is the 4th leading cause of death and can lead to disability.
