Brain Stimulation Improves Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

Health Day reports that brain stimulation can help improve symptoms of Parkinson's disease. This debilitating condition could lead to an individual seeking Social Security disability benefits if they are no longer able to work.

A new small study shows improvements in patients with Parkinson's disease, at least as far as improving some symptoms including motor function and controlling tremors, when deep brain stimulation is performed; however, brain stimulation does not stop the progression of this disease.

Other symptoms that may be experienced by those with Parkinson's disease include the following:

  • impaired balance/coordination;
  • tremors in face, legs, arms, and hands; and
  • limb and trunk stiffness.

Brain stimulation, which is done when a neurostimulator is placed under the skin near the patient's collarbone, can help improve motor signs in Parkinson patients for up to 10 years after the device is implanted.

Yet, because it doesn't stop the progression, individuals may still experience difficulties with walking, talking, and balance, which can lead to a diminished quality of life and eventually disability.

If you are concerned about your eligibility for Social Security disability benefits or if you were denied benefits, then you may wish to seek professional legal help. A Miami Beach Social Security disability lawyer can assist you with your claim.
