Lou Gehrig's disease, in medical terms known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is a serious condition affecting about 30,000 individuals in the United States. It is an incurable, fatal disease that can cause an individual to seek Social Security disability benefits.
Researchers are now seeing a correlation between brain trauma and Lou Gehrig's disease; specifically, that a similarity exists between the symptoms for the two conditions. A discovery of 3 athletes who had been diagnosed with ALS later revealed that they actually had a fatal disease related to brain trauma.
This finding is now raising concerns that brain trauma should first be looked into since there is a significant rate of individuals who are athletes or military veterans being diagnosed with ALS. Head trauma is a very real possibility for athletes who participate in contact sports and those in the military who have been injured.
There may be a large portion of patients being diagnosed for ALS who actually have a motor-neuron disease. If that is the case, the real cause of injury and illness is going untreated.
