Breast Cancer Victims May Be Eligible for Disability Payments

If you have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, you should know that you have the option to receive Social Security disability. Of course, all the usual stipulations when it comes to disabilities apply. As long as you can no longer work, and have evidence that your condition is unlikely to improve, though, you have a right to monthly benefits.

Like any other disability, there are certain regulations that you should know before you apply. When it comes to getting benefits due to breast cancer, know that you must have one of the following:

  • Inflammatory carcinoma
  • Inoperable carcinoma
  • Recurring carcinoma
  • Distant metastases, in which the cancer has spread to distant organs

Not everyone suffering from breast cancer has one of these issues. It is important to find out from your doctor which one you have, if any. If none apply to you, it may be harder than usual to obtain disability benefits from the SSA, but it is sometimes still possible.

If you do not qualify based on the condition you have, you may be eligible for a medical vocational allowance. This occurs when a disability judge takes a look at your medical records, your ability to function each day, your work history, and your age. It may then be determined that you cannot return to your previous career, nor can you switch to any similar career that you might have considered trying out.

If you are suffering from breast cancer but are not sure how you would qualify for disability, contact a lawyer. He can make sure you get what you rightfully deserve. The pain, exhaustion, and constant medical appointments associated with breast cancer are simply not conducive to holding any kind of job, no matter what type you have. You deserve to get monthly checks to help you live life just as much as those suffering from other conditions do, and a good lawyer can help you get them.
