Broward County Working Towards Developing Veterans Court

According to an article in the Sun Sentinel, Broward County is planning on providing help for U.S. veterans who find themselves in legal trouble due to mental health conditions, when they return home from combat. As they are veterans, it is believed specific services help them to get their lives back on track.

The court, however, is not ready to help just yet; it is still in the early stages. Funneling every veteran into the same courtroom gives courts a distinct advantage in that it would allow the Veterans Court to individually identify the help every veteran needs for his or her problem. Once that is completed, veterans can be placed into programs already in existence.

The success of the Palm Beach Veterans Court inspired the development of the Broward County Veterans Court. Approximately 280 veterans have been processed through Palm Beach, and about 90 of those were felonies. As a result, fewer veterans went to jail and instead, received the help that they needed.

Broward has one of the highest concentration of veterans in the state, which means the Veterans Court may be dealing with many cases of mental illness. Although prosecutors would still have discretion as to whether a person’s military service qualified them for eligibility, the possibility of community based help being specifically used for veterans may be promising.
