CA Fiscal Crises Will Impact SSI Recipients

Anyone living in California or paying attention to the state's fiscal crises may have heard how possible budget cuts could decrease benefits for those receiving aid from the state. This includes residents who live off of Supplemental Security Income and the State Supplemental Payment (SSP).

According to San Diego News Network, the state may be closer than ever to making the budget cuts that would affect so many. Last month, Governor Schwarzenegger requested about $6.9 billion in aid from the Federal government. On Monday, President Obama offered the state $1.5 billion; significantly less assistance than what was requested.

This unfortunately means that many disabled individuals and low-income families living in California will likely experience a decrease in their SSI benefits. Social services are reportedly next to be decreased because of California's budgetary constraints.

The state also offers SSI recipients the SSP to help pay for routine expenses, including rent groceries and medical costs. California currently offers about $171 per month in SSP. This amount will likely be slashed to $156. In comparison, that figure in 1990 was $244 per month. As the cost of living (COL) has risen, California's poorest residents have received less financial support.
