In a report from Medline Plus, cancer patients are at risk of venous thromboembolism (blood clots) even after being discharged from the hospital. If cancer becomes permanently disabling, then you may qualify to receive Social Security disability benefits.
Researchers indicate this should tell doctors that rather than focusing on preventing venous thromboembolism (VTE) while hospitalized, more needs to be done on an outpatient basis. Their study shows that 1 in 5 patients will develop a blood clot but there’s belief that the number could be going up.
VTE could not only lead to severe complications but there’s an increased risk of developing other ones. Cancer patients need to be made aware of this potential risk and doctors need to be taking more measures to prevent it.
A study found that in 18,000 cancer patients who were analyzed over a period of 4 years, of the 5.6% who developed a blood clot, 78% weren’t hospitalized. Outpatient care for cancer patients needs to include prevention of VTE.
Signs of a blood clot include shortness of breath, swelling or redness in the limbs. Patients should immediately report to a doctor if any of these symptoms are experienced.
