A new study shows that the cancer risk for women may be doubled if they have type 2 diabetes. The insulin-like hormones that circulate throughout the body and are brought on by type 2 diabetes may actually increase a woman's chance of cancer. On the other hand, these same hormones show that they could reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men.
The risk appears to be increased because of the interaction between female hormones and diabetes. The uterus, ovaries and other parts of a woman's body tend to be more receptive to certain types of cancer.
Researchers believe that physicians need to take this information into consideration when going through a patient's health history. Dr. Chodick, who oversaw the study, says that diabetic women should be screened earlier than other women for colon cancer.
Diabetes continues to rise in the United States. The complications of diabetes can leave someone unable to work. Long-term disability benefits can help cover lost wages while out of work.
