Cancer Risk May Double after an Organ Transplant

According to USA Today, the risk of cancer may be doubled after an organ transplant. When a serious medical condition or procedure will require you to miss months of work, long-term disability benefits could be available.

New research finds that 32 different types of cancer could be developed after a patient has undergone an organ transplant; however, the benefits to this type of medical surgery outweigh the risks involved. Considering the risk of developing cancer, these patients should undergo a more careful and thorough screening.

To prevent organ rejection, one of the follow-up treatment plans is to take a medication that suppresses the immune system but, by doing this, it also increases the risk of cancer because you need a strong immune system to fight cancer.

Additionally, some types of cancers that result from viruses are at risk because a poor immune system has difficulty fighting off the virus. Researchers suggest that screening for viruses be done prior to giving this type of medication.

Organ transplants save lives but patients should also take measures to help decrease risk factors of developing cancer
. This includes not smoking, wearing sunscreen, and following any recommendations by their doctor.

Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don't make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve.
