Cape Coral VA Clinic to Open in 2012

May 19, 2010 - Cape Coral, Florida is getting a new Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center. If their current pace holds, construction on the clinic will be completed by December of 2011.

The groundbreaking ceremony for this VA clinic was in January of this year. Since then, approximately 40% of the building's frame has been constructed and June will see the walls being put up on the building's four floors. The building itself is 22,000 square feet and aims to serve the 202,000 veterans currently living in Southwest Florida.

The $132 million price tag on the Cape Coral VA clinic includes the purchase of the 30 acres on which the clinic sits as well as the designs for the clinic itself. The Cape Coral location is very well located. Currently, veterans have to travel to St. Petersburg to receive care. Should those veterans require major surgery, extended stays in St. Petersburg can make it difficult for families to accompany the veterans.

Going beyond just helping veterans, the Cape Coral VA clinic will bring jobs to the area. The administrators of the clinic are attempting to convince businesses complimenting the VA clinic's goals to move in near the clinic. Such businesses include:

  • Pharmacies; and
  • Medical professionals.

Neighborhoods encompassing residential houses will surround the clinic and will be offered to both patients and employees. This updated clinic is being used as a replacement for the smaller VA clinic in Fort Myers. The Cape Coral VA clinic almost doubles the amount of employees as the clinic in Fort Myers. It sounds like the veterans in Southwest Florida will really benefit from this new clinic.
