Here are some important facts from AHA’s Heart Disease and Stroke Statistical Update 2012:
more than 67% of adults are obese;
31.7% children are overweight or obese;
94% of adults have at least 1 risk factor for heart disease;
38% of adults have at least 3 risk factors for heart disease;
50% of children ages 12 to 19 meet 4 or fewer of the criteria for what is considered good heart health;
between 1971 and 2004, calorie consumption in women has increased 22% and in men 10%; and
33% of adults don’t engage in physical activity.
AHA has set a goal for the U.S. They want to see a 20% improvement in heart health for Americans by the year 2020.
