Causes of Lung Cancer

If you suffer from lung cancer and are unable to work because of your illness or required treatment, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits.

While smoking accounts for roughly 90% of lung cancer cases, it is not the only cause of lung cancer. Other causes for lung cancer include:

  • Secondhand smoking - Nonsmokers who work or live with smokers have a 24% increased risk for lung cancer;
  • Asbestos - Asbestos fibers can collect in lung tissue. Exposure typically occurs in a workplace setting;
  • Radon gas - Approximately 12% of lung cancer fatalities are a result of radon gas, which is a gas that can enter homes;
  • Genetics - It is believed that genetics may play a role in developing lung cancer;
  • Lung disease - Lung disease increases the risk of lung cancer 4 to 6 times. The most common type of lung disease is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD);
  • Past history of lung cancer - Anyone who has a past history of lung cancer is susceptible to developing lung cancer a second time; and
  • Air pollution - Up to 1% of lung cancer fatalities are a result of air pollution.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with lung cancer or any other severe mental or physical disabling condition, contact a Ft. Lauderdale Social Security disability attorney.
