According to
Health News, the annual Mortality Report from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics has been released. This report identifies the top 5 causes of death in the United States.
These statistics are based on the year 2008 and include some good news such as a decline in the age-adjusted death rate for the U.S. population, falling to its lowest at 758.7 deaths per 100,000 populations. Additionally, there is an all-time low of infant deaths at 6.59 infant deaths per 1,000 births.
Despite this good news, in the year 2008 the United States still experienced a loss of lives totaling 2,473,018.
The report shows that the top 5 causes of death in America are:
- heart disease;
- cancer;
- chronic lower respiratory diseases;
- stroke; and
- accidents (unintentional injuries).
The report also indicates that mortality rates dropped for 5 other leading causes of death:
- accidents - 3.5%;
- homicide - 3.3%;
- diabetes - 3.1%;
- heart disease - 2.2%; and
- cancer - 1.6%.
