CDC Identifies Top 5 Causes of Death in America

The Social Security Administration provides disability benefits to those who qualify. Depending on the severity of your medical condition, you may be entitled to receive Social Security disability benefits.

According to Health News, the annual Mortality Report from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics has been released. This report identifies the top 5 causes of death in the United States.

These statistics are based on the year 2008 and include some good news such as a decline in the age-adjusted death rate for the U.S. population, falling to its lowest at 758.7 deaths per 100,000 populations. Additionally, there is an all-time low of infant deaths at 6.59 infant deaths per 1,000 births.

Despite this good news, in the year 2008 the United States still experienced a loss of lives totaling 2,473,018.

The report shows that the top 5 causes of death in America are:

  • heart disease;
  • cancer;
  • chronic lower respiratory diseases;
  • stroke; and
  • accidents (unintentional injuries).

The report also indicates that mortality rates dropped for 5 other leading causes of death:

  • accidents - 3.5%;
  • homicide - 3.3%;
  • diabetes - 3.1%;
  • heart disease - 2.2%; and
  • cancer - 1.6%.

When you suffer from a debilitating condition that prevents you from functioning on a daily basis, you may be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits. Consulting with a Social Security disability attorney should be your next step to see if you qualify.

When you are interviewing Social Security Disability attorneys ask critical questions, like: how many Social Security Disability hearings do you have per month; do you understand the SSA's POMS (the manual Social Security employees use to process claims); and, do you understand the date last insured and how it affects my disability onset date?
