CDC Recommends Change in VA HIV Testing

The Department of Veterans Affairs announced this week that it is implementing a policy recommendation made by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The CDC advised the VA to routinely test all veterans seeking medical care for HIV.

Previously, VA medical protocol had required written consent, and a counseling session prior and subsequent to all HIV testing. The revised HIV testing procedure will simply require verbal consent from patients who can also opt to decline the testing. "At risk patients" will not be identified, as all consenting patients will be tested.

Approximately 22,000 HIV+ veterans seek treatment through the VA healthcare system. The CDC estimates that as of 2006, there were 1.1 million HIV+ people living in the United States.

If you an HIV+ veteran and need help fighting for your veterans' disability compensation do not hesitate to contact an attorney at LaVan & Neidenberg today.
