January 13, 2011 - The Jack C. Montgomery Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center recently installed 36 ceiling lifts, which the medical center staff has been looking forward to using. The lifts will help both medical personnel and veterans when transporting veterans around the hospital. Installing lifts in every VA medical center across the nation is part of a new VA directive.
Ceiling lifts help the hospital staff move veterans unable to move themselves, whether due to illness or disability. The lifts allow 1 worker to do what it previously took 4 workers to accomplish, and relieves tension on everyone involved. Veterans report they feel secure in the chairs, and that the chairs are more comfortable than being lifted by 4 individual workers. Additionally, the veterans don't have to worry about hurting the staff while they are being lifted.
The lift itself is essentially a fabric chair that is connected to a ceiling-mounted hoist, which runs on a track allowing for horizontal movement. Most slip and fall accidents happen traveling to, from or using the restroom. These lifts all but eliminate those risks.
The lifts are so helpful that the medical center has plans to install 34 more. Every emergency room will have one, and there will be one leading to the emergency rooms themselves. Eventually there will be a lift in every room where patient care is provided, to include the dental center
Soldiers can return home with a number of conditions, injuries, and aggravated preexisting conditions. If you believe you have a service-connected physical or psychological injury you may be entitled to Veterans’ Disability Compensation.
