Cerebrospinal Fluid Changes May Indicate Onset of Alzheimer’s

According to a report from the Doctor’s Lounge, cerebrospinal fluid changes may indicate the onset of Alzheimer’s. If you have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or any other health condition that has led to severe impairment, you may qualify to receive long-term disability benefits.

These changes in the brain may become evident 5 to 10 years before the onset of Alzheimer’s
. Patients who have mild cognitive impairment (which is many times a precursor to Alzheimer’s) were found to have lowered levels of cerebrospinal fluid.

If this is the case, then researchers can begin to look at ways to treat the patient while they are still in the earliest stages.
The hope is to find ways to slow down or stop the progression of symptoms.

Of the patients involved in this particular study, 54% ended up developing Alzheimer’s later on and 16% developed other forms of dementia. Those patients that developed Alzheimer’s experienced significant drops in cerebrospinal fluid levels years before their diagnosis.

Researchers in this study indicate that they believe with the changes in cerebrospinal fluid present, 9 out of 10 individuals with mild cognitive impairment will eventually develop Alzheimer’s.
